Characterizing Plastics for the Future of Building Materials
We have been making plastic sheets with our sheet press and wanted to know more about the properties of these sheets and what they might be used for outside out studio. One way we found out more was through the CMU Materials Science & Engineering Capstone Project.
This is how it worked:
We proposed a project. “Test out sheets and tell us more about their properties!”
Our project was selected by a brave group of students. Seniors Audrey Lambert, Ellie Lowe, Aleena Siddiqui, and Eliana Szabo took up the challenge.
Creating and testing…. more creating and testing. Together, we crafted sheets and they were tested for such properties as scratch and dent resistance, resistance to warping and humidity and heat, and cleaning requirements. After these tests were preformed we crafted more sheets, changing up our process to see if we could make our product better and stronger.
Check out their final report below and thank you to our amazing student team, CMU, Professor Heard, Professor Sokalski, and Roy Matway for suggesting we apply for this program!
